A category is a feature of MediaWiki used to classify pages. Categories provide automatic indexes to pages tagged as being in a category.

Together with links and templates they structure a project.

[edit] Category pages

You can define the pages in the Category namespace to suit the content your wiki.Category pages are created and editable like any other kind of page in the wiki. From any page you can create a link like this:

[[:Category:Business Systems]] - note that the leading colon is necessary to display the link instead of just "tagging" this page

The last part of what is displayed on a category page is an automatically generated, alphabetical list of all pages in that category.

[edit] Categorizing pages

Once defined you can add content to a category by linking to the category from those pages, like this:

[[Category:Business Systems]]

When a page belongs to one or more categories, this information appears at the bottom of the page.

[edit] Managing Categories

For a list of categories in this sense, see Special:Allpages/Category: (note the colon at the end).

For a complete list of categories, see Special:Categories.

To refer to a category within a page as a normal wiki link (without adding the page to the category) prefix the link name with a colon. For example:

[[:Category:Business Systems]]

[edit] Subcategories

Once categories are created, they can be arranged in a hierarchy by tagging category pages as belonging to other categories (just like a normal page is added to a category)

Note that in this way, you have to build these hierarchies from the bottom up, not the top down.
